Vol. II No. 25

Time-Change Department:
In case you missed it, we in the frozen north are following our American friends and advancing the clocks three weeks earlier than usual. As you hit the sack Saturday night (March 10) turn the clock ahead one hour. Chances are pretty good your computer will not do an automatic update; you’ll probably have to do it manually, or live with your computer clock being out by an hour for the next three weeks.

Jacob’s Mission Department:
An 11 year old lad in Mapleridge BC went to buy a puppy, heard about abused dogs, and decided to do something about it. Jacob Carbery started the “Wiggle-waggle Walk” (great name) to raise funds, and the idea took off. Local fire department got involved, along with a lot of folks from the community. A short time later, more than $10,000.00 had flowed into the cause. Next time you think one person cannot make a difference consider what one kid-on-a-mission accomplished.

Rumour Laid-to-Rest Department:
Ever since “The Day the Music Died” (February 3, 1959), when Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash, stories have floated around that the Bopper actually died from a gun shot. The family of J.P. Richardson (aka The Big Bopper) recently had his body exhumed and an autopsy conducted that confirms there was no such wound, and he in fact, died as a result of the crash. In a sidebar to this story, Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane to J.P. and the two bantered about the freezing bus ride versus a quick trip by air. Jennings off-hand remark: “I hope your plane crashes” haunted the man for years.

Big Bucks in Big-smoke Department:
Signs a Federal election may be looming continued as the P.M. blew into Toronto to announce a ton of money for an extension to the subway system (it will wind up in a cabinet minister’s backyard, but that’s just a coincidence …hmmm!).
Bob Rae, ex NDP Premier, ex-Liberal-leadership candidate, will announce he’s running for federal parliament whenever the election does happen. Stéphan Dion continues his national tour to raise Liberal fortunes, and “eco” is the buzzword of the moment, as the environment persists as the current cause-celèbre. (no less than 3 of five major funding announcements included "eco" in the headlines.)
