Election-budget Department:
So, for those of you had other things to do rather than watch live coverage of the federal budget this week, here’s the highlight: $20 billion in tax cuts and spending.
If, like me, you have trouble understanding a “billion” anythings, the nooze for the little-folks is a tax break if you have kids under 18, a tax on gas-guzzling vehicles, a lot of money for provinces that don’t have enough, and a bucket of cash for Quebec: Surprise!
Layton and Dion don’t like it, Duceppe doesn’t like it much, but will support it.
Current Buzzwords Department:
Your Intrepid Reporter (I.R.) brings the following phrases to your attention: “Working families” – “Ordinary Canadians” – “Average Canadians” -- “Eco-anything”. All of these make it into almost every comment by anyone with a political agenda.
What’s in a Name? Department:
Ian Gill, President of Eco Trust Canada is ticked. Seems the Conservatives have lidnapped a name for the current spending-spree across the country, which is strikingly similar to Mr. Gill’s non-profit organization, Eco-trust Canada. The Feds use “Canada Eco-trust” as the handle for their efforts to fix the environment. Gill is “exploring his options” – aka “Call the lawyers and see if there’s a windfall waiting to drop into his lap”.
Blowing Up a Piece of History Department;
The Stardust hotel in Vegas was demolished after almost fifty years as a landmark in the City-that-Never-Sleeps. Opened in 1958, the icon of the strip pioneered cheap rooms and food to keep gamblers happy. It will be replaced by another mega-facility featuring 5000 rooms, a million square feet of meeting space and a shopping mall. The tab for this wee project? $4.4 Billion (that’s Billion, with a large B).
